Cosmetics are a necessity

Cosmetic products help to conceal acne lesions and microcomedones and form a very important part of the treatment of Acne in both men and women (in addition to a much needed psychological prop). Soaps,Scrubs,Masks,Sunscreens and Moisturizers are all important to the Acne sufferer. However,it has been known for a long time now that some cosmetic products may aggravate or even induce acne.

Are cosmetics a hindrance in Acne?

You cannot be practically asked to avoid using make-up or other cosmetic products so the next best thing is to identify products that suit your skin and avoid those with a COMEDOGENIC or ACNEGENIC tendency.

Comedogenicity and Acnegenicity

It is a well known fact that certain chemicals and other materials used in the manufacture of cosmetics can cause and aggravate existing ACNE.These substances are called “comedogenic” materials. However, since the end result is the production of an ACNE flare up, these substances are often described as “ACNEGENIC”. An acnegenic substance has the ability to cause and aggravate both COMEDONES and ACNE (pimples)

True acne by these substances is caused by comedonal formation, leading to acne lesions over a long period of time.

Folliculitis is a chemical irritation of the cells lining the follicle(pore) by chemicals in certain cosmetic products and causes inflammatory pustules and papules to develop over a very short period of time and can be treated just as fast by removing the cause.ie:Identify and STOP using the Cosmetic product.

If you wish to avoid cosmetic products that may cause or aggravate ACNE look out for any of the following ingredients on the list on any product label for acnegenic materials:

Butyl stearate, Cocoa butter, Coconut oil, Grapeseed oil, Isopropyl isostearate, Isopropyl myristate, Isopropyl palmitate, Isostearic acid, Lanolin, Oleic acid, Oleyl alcohol, Octyl palmitate, D and C red dyes.

These substaces are not always listed on the ingredient list on the label,so you may go through a trial and error process to find out which products suit you. In addition, it is important to remember that comedogenicity is not exclusive to foundations or concealers and moisturizers.Blushers, lipsticks, pressed powders and eye-shadows are all possible culprits. It is best to look for products that are labeled "non-comedogenic" and try a few to find the most suitable one for your skin type. Remember, price is not an indication of suitability here and any cosmetic may exacerbate your acne. Try out any new product on a small part of the cheek or the inside of your wrist for a few days to see if your skin will tolerate it.back to top

Sunscreens

It has been found that certain sunscreen products often have a comedogenic potential and that this can be made worse by exposure to sunlight. Some of the greasier products aggravate acne. If you are expecting your acne to improve when on a holiday in a sunny resort and don't achieve it, examine your sunscreen product. It is best to use an oil-free sunblock or a non-comedogenic foundation with a built in sunscreen. back to top

Moisturizers and Acne

Moisturizers form an important part of the acne treatment regime, especially as most active treatment has a DRYING effect on the skin.Topical Benzoyl peroxide, the retinoids and antibiotics all have a drying effect on the skin. However, moisturizers may have a COMEDOGENIC potential and need to be chosen with care.It is best to avoid OILY products and to look for oil-free, non-acnegenic or non-comedogenic products. Always try it out on a small area for a few days. A good, simple and cheap product is AQUEOUS CREAM.back to top

Add Devina`s choice to your skin care regime

Acne is best treated and prevented by addressing ALL the factors that lead to the formation of lesions. Therefore it is logical to combine treatment with products that address different causative factors(sebum, bacteria, dead skin). The action of each preparation will be ADDITIVE and lead to a more effective and faster result than can be achieved by a single product alone. It is usual to apply one product in the morning and a different one in the evening. However there are also products available that contain TWO of the active agents in the one application. All sufferers want instant results. You can help yourself by using this technique.

Complement, augment and enhance your existing acne treatment by taking advantage of the fact that by adding a product that addresses a different causative factor to your regime will enhance the existing treatment synergistically (An additive action) by producing FASTER and more EFFECTIVE results. Add DEVINA`S CHOICE peel-off face and body mask to your existing medical treatment for acne to enhance its effects. back to top
